1. STUCK IN THE PAST
Give communication with your children a good chance every day.
2. JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS
Allow your children to explain the situation instead of making assumptions.
3. GENERALISING
Be careful with words like “never” or “always”. Be specific on what you are unhappy about.
4. INSENSITIVITY TO EMOTIONS
If you are tired or stressed, there is a risk of being insensitive to your child’s emotions.
5. INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Avoid piling up your frustrations until you are so angry and lose sight of the specifics.
6. NOT LISTENING ENOUGH
Keep your concerns in check. Listen to your children and allow them to make mistakes.
7. UNABLE TO REPHRASE
Say something like, “Do you mean to say that . . . “ to make sure you are on the same page.
8. ABSENCE OF CONNECTION
Make the time to connect with your child to build trust and respect.
9. LACK OF INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION
Spend time individually with each child, regardless of his/her age.
10. FAILING TO CLARIFY FAMILY ISSUES
If there are problems, explain the situation to your children to clear the air.
