It takes time to teach children to make good decisions. Rather than jumping in and making decisions for them, help them to answer three key questions:
1) “Why do I want to do this?” Is it because I’m angry or to please someone? This is to ensure that they have good intentions.
2) “What are my options?” What are the choices that I have? This is to help them become less impulsive and think of possibilities.
3) “For each option, what are the consequences?” Will it help or hurt someone? This is to nurture the habit of thinking long term.
Above all, be patient in guiding them.
