If you want your child to change, apply the “WHAT GETS NOTICED GETS DONE” concept.
If you have ten things that you want your child to change, choose one that is most important. For a time, focus on this particular behaviour. Show him what you want him to do, not what you don’t want him to do.
Examples:
1) If your child’s work is untidy, find a page where his work is relatively tidy and give a specific comment: “I like this page. The words are clearly written. The lines are straight and neat.” (NOT “Your work is untidy.”)
2) If your child has a habit of yelling to his siblings, say firmly “In this family, we talk in a nice way to each other. Yelling doesn’t belong here.” (NOT “Stop yelling to your brother!”)
3) If your child is consistently late for prayer, tell him “I want us to pray together as soon as the adhan (call for prayer) is heard.” Then follow through. (NOT “You are always late for prayer.”)
What gets noticed gets done.
