Recently I met this girl, a teenager, who was depressed and demotivated. It really puzzled me. She was pretty, had good manners and smart. But she didn’t think she was any of these. As we sat together, I pointed out to her that, the fact that she was able to express herself well (she speaks fluent English) proved she was a bright girl. Then I asked her to smile. “Do you know that you look beautiful with that smile?” She looked surprised. I realised that she has never been told any of these things … On the contrary, she was told quite the opposite. I wonder, what stops us from telling our daughters that their smile is the most beautiful thing that they could wear?
