Dealing With Difficult People:
Tips To Practice And Model For Your Children

1. BE ABOVE THE FRAY

Stay calm – imagine their hurtful words to be like water sliding off a duck’s back.

2. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY

It is possible that the person just has a habit of being rude to others.

3. ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE PEOPLE

You might feel the urge to change him or her. Let it go.

4. CONTINUE TO DO GOOD ANYWAY

Do not let anyone’s rudeness push you into becoming an insensitive person.

5. THE SILENT TREATMENT MAY BE BEST

Responding to rude people may add fuel to their negativity.

6. BE ASSERTIVE

If you are unable to walk away, simply be firm and ask, “How can I help you?”

7. KEEP THE CONVERSATION SHORT

This applies when you are required to deal with the rude person regularly.

8. DO NOT BRING IT HOME

Put on a bright smile the moment you step in the door of your home – your family deserves the best of you.
